HUNTER HISTORY
The Hunters originated in Normandy and came to Scotland about 1110.
These Norman Lords came to Ayrchire at the invite of King David I.
In papers dating 1116 William the Hunter (lst laird) was appointed Royal Huntsman.
The Hunterston castle was most likey built in mid 13th century when
King Alexander III of Scotland wanted protection from the Norseman.
Hunters allied with thier neighbors against King Hakon of Norway who was defeated
at the battle of Largs in 1263. In 1374 the land was granted to William Hunter (10th laird)
by Robert II. The Hunters continued to serve as The Royal Huntman and solders.
HUNTERSTON CASTLE
Ayrshire, Scotland
There is an ancient yew tree in the garden at Hunterston
Castle. It is over 600 years old and early Hunters
made longbows from the wood.
